About festival
Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) is presented by Romanian Film Promotion. Founded in 2002, TIFF is the first international feature film festival in Romania.
During these last eight years, TIFF has become a well-known brand in Romania, not only due to the outstanding films screened every year, but also for the effective layout, sparkling atmosphere and density of events, from seminars, workshops and panels to fabulous concerts and crazy all night long parties.
At TIFF's 2007 edition, presented for the first time both in Cluj and in Sibiu, that year's European Capital of Culture, over 50 000 people have attended the screenings in the four cinemas of Cluj-Napoca, eager not to miss the over 100 features, and also our special short-films programs.
The last two editions of TIFF have not only been spectacular, but also showcased an extremely generous and diversified offer of films and sensational events. The TIFF selection in 2008 has gathered a record number of 200 productions screened in no less than 8 locations. And the 2009 edition has broken all the records, with 209 films from 47 countries that have been screened in the nine locations of the festival.
Over these 8 editions, TIFF was honoured to be the host of important figures from European and worldwide cinema and to have them become the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Among these personalities there are: Julie Delpy, Michael Radford, Annie Girardot, Udo Kier, Vanessa Redgrave, Franco Nero, Nicolas Roeg, Catherine Deneuve and Claudia Cardinale.
TIFF has become the traditional place for national releases of the most important domestic productions. This is the place where our audience has seen, for the first time in Romania, the films that marked the Romanian film production boom over the last years: Occident (dir. Cristian Mungiu), The Death of Mister Lăzărescu (dir. Cristi Puiu), 12:08 East of Bucharest (dir. Corneliu Porumboiu), The Way I Spent the End of The World (dir. Cătălin Mitulescu), The Paper Will Be Blue (dir. Radu Muntean), Love Sick (dr. by Tudor Giurgiu), California dreamin’ (endless) (dir. Cristian Nemescu ), the winner of the 2007 Palme d'Or, Cristian Mungiu's feature 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days, and many other.
In the coming years, Transylvania IFF's main goal remains the promotion of cinematic art by presenting some of the most important films of the moment that feature both originality and independence of expression. This is a festival where imagination and youthful vision were always encouraged, and which the organizers have shaped into a high-spirited cultural landmark.
The 9th edition of TIFF will take place during May 28 - June 6.
Romanian Film Promotion was founded in 2001 and its main goals are to encourage and promote young filmmakers, help distribution and promotion of the European cinema, organize seminars and conferences about film production and distribution, and educate an upcoming generation's taste in quality cinema.
