About festival
Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) is presented by Romanian Film Promotion. Founded in 2002, TIFF is the first international feature film festival in Romania.
During these nine years, TIFF has become a well-known brand in Romania, not only due to the outstanding films screened every year, but also for the effective organization, sparkling atmosphere and density of events, from seminars, workshops and panels to fabulous concerts and crazy all night long parties.
TIFF's 2007 edition, was the first to be presented simultaneously in Cluj and Sibiu, that year's European Capital of Culture.
The last two editions of TIFF have not only been spectacular, but also showcased an extremely generous and diverse offer of films and sensational events. The TIFF 2009 selection gathered 209 films from 47 countries, screened in no less than 9 locations. The 2010 edition has broken all the records, with 240 films, screened in the 13 festival locations, attracting over 55.000 spectators during the ten days of the festival.
Over these 9 editions, TIFF was honored to host important personalities of European and worldwide cinema offering Lifetime Achievement Awards to Julie Delpy, Michael Radford, Annie Girardot, Udo Kier, Vanessa Redgrave, Franco Nero, Nicolas Roeg, Catherine Deneuve, Claudia Cardinale and Wim Wenders.
TIFF has become the place for national releases of the most important domestic productions. This is the place where Romanian audiences first got to see the films that marked the boom of Romanian film production over the past years: Occident (dir. Cristian Mungiu), The Death of Mister Lăzărescu (dir. Cristi Puiu), 12:08 East of Bucharest (dir. Corneliu Porumboiu), The Way I Spent the End of The World (dir. Cătălin Mitulescu), The Paper Will Be Blue (dir. Radu Muntean), Love Sick (dir. Tudor Giurgiu), California Dreamin’ (endless) (dir. Cristian Nemescu), Cristian Mungiu's feature 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days, winner of the 2007 Palme d'Or, Tales from the Golden Age (dir. Cristian Mungiu, Ioana Uricaru, Constantin Popescu Jr, Răzvan Mărculescu and Hanno Hofer), Police, adjective (dir. Corneliu Porumboiu), The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauşescu (dir. Andrei Ujică), Tuesday, afer Christmas (dir. Radu Muntean), films presented at the 2010 edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
In the following years, Transilvania IFF's main goal remains the promotion of cinematic art by presenting the most important films of the moment that feature both originality and independence of expression. This is a festival where imagination and youthful vision were always encouraged, and which the organizers have shaped up into a high-spirited cultural landmark.
The 10th edition of TIFF will take place from June 3rd to June 12th 2011 in Cluj- Napoca and from June 15th to June 19th 2011 in Sibiu.
Romanian Film Promotion was founded in 2001 and its main goals are to encourage and promote young filmmakers, help distribution and promotion of the European cinema, organize seminars and conferences about film production and distribution, and educate an upcoming generation's taste in quality cinema.
