TIFF has a new festival director

The preparations for the 5th edition of Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF 2006) to take place in Cluj between 2-11 of June, have started and are taking place at a fast pace. The Festival, presented by the Romanian Film Promotion Association is the most prominent event of the film industry in Romania.

The new edition of TIFF brings a change among the organizers. Due to the fact that Tudor Giurgiu has been appointed President-General Director of Romanian National Television (TVR), he had to renounce the positions of chairman of the Romanian Film Promotion Association and of TIFF Director. Thus, the new Director of Transylvania International Film Festival is Mihai Chirilov, who for the last four years, has been the TIFF Creative Director. Nevertheless Mihai Chirilov will remain in charge with the film selection for TIFF 2006.

33 year-old Mihai Chirilov is a renowned and esteemed Romanian film critic. Between 1995-1999 he was executive editor of the ProCinema magazine. His film reviews can be read in "Dilema Veche" and "Observatorul Cultural".

At present, Mihai is editor-in-chief of the film, music & urban culture magazine Re:publik, entertainment editor of Cosmopolitan and film correspondent for Radio France International from Berlin and Venice Film Festivals.

Also, Mihai is curator of the British Film Festival (Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara) and of the Film Balkan Boom Festival, Bucharest (2004) as well as co-author, with the film critic Alex Leo Serban, of a book about the famous director Lars von Trier: "Filmele, fantomele, femeile" (ed. Idea, 2004). Member of the FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) Jury of the international film festivals in Hong Kong (2000), Goteborg (2003) and Chicago (2005), Mihai has been a guest of numerous film and theatre festivals such as: Cannes, Berlin, Venice, New York, Hong Kong, San Sebastian, Clermont-Ferrand, London, Avignon, Taormina, Bruxelles, Stockholm. Tudor Giurgiu remains with the TIFF team, as the Honorary Director of the Festival.
